BAR SCHOLARS OF 2004

Thirteen applications for the Bar Scholarship were received this year. On the recommendation of the Bar Scholarship Committee chaired by the Honourable Chief Justice, with the Honourable Mr. Justice Ribeiro, Mr. Gary Plowman, SC, Mr. Warren Chan, SC and Ms. Po Wing Kay, the Bar Council has resolved to award the following four scholarships, that is, for Mr. Calvin Cheuk, Miss Winnie Tsui, Mr. Hew Yang Wahn, and Mr. Anthony Chan will be joining the Bar.

The Bar Scholars will each receive an award of HK$200,000.00, half of the amount will be paid upon the commencement of their pupillage and the balance after the completion of 6 months' pupillage.

Donors to the various funds for new entrants to the Bar will be invited to the presentation ceremony and reception in due course.

HKBA - CHARLES CHING MEMORIAL SCHOLAR OF 2004

Four applications for the Charles Ching Memorial Scholarship were received this year. On the recommendation of the Charles Ching Scholarship Committee comprising the Honourable Mr. Justice Sakhrani (chairman), Mr. Patrick Fung, SC and Ms. Adriana Ching, the Committee has resolved to award one scholarship to Miss Rachel Lam who will undergo advocacy training and pupillage in the United Kingdom.

The Charles Ching Scholar will receive an award of HK$50,000.00 to cover air fares to and from London and small amount of subsidy for living expenses.

INTEREST ON JUDGMENT DEBT

The Chief Justice has ordered that the rate of interest on judgment debts in the High Court and District Court shall remain at 8% per annum.
