CODE OF CONDUCT

ANNEX 4 (paragraphs 23-24)
LIST OF APPROVED SUPPLEMENTARY OCCUPATIONS

The following supplementary occupations have been approved as compatible with practice at the Bar:-

(1) Legal
(a) Offices
(i) Coroner
(ii) Third Party Neutral in alternative dispute resolution procedures, including Mediator, Adjudicator, Arbitrator or Umpire. (Circular No. 48/98)
(iii) Member of a board of review, board of inquiry, tribunal, panel or committee established under any statutory or administrative powers.(Circular No. 15/99)
(b) Occupations
(i) Examining newspapers, periodicals, books, scripts and other publications for libel, breach of copyright, contempt of court and the like
(ii) Advising producers of plays and films on such matters
(iii) Coaching students for Bar examinations
(iv) Running a private law tutorial school
(v) Acting as a trustee for remuneration provided for in the settlement
(vi) Law Reporting
(vii) Acting as unpaid or honorary legal adviser to any charitable, benevolent or philanthropic institution, including a company that has been established for such purpose.(Circular No. 15/99)

(2) Legal or Non-Legal
(a) Lecturing
(b) Writing, editing, and reviewing books and periodicals
(c) Journalism
(d) Broadcasting
(e) Member of a non-trading body established under any statutory powers (Circular No. 15/99)

(3) Non-Legal
(a) Politics and local government
(i) Member of the Executive Council
(ii) Member of the Legislative Council
(iii) Member of the Urban Council
(iv) Member of a City District Board
(v) Member of a "public body" as defined in the Interpretation and General Clauses Ordinance, Cap. 1 apart from the above (Circular No. 15/99)

(b) Business
(i) Non-executive director of a company (whether public or private) or chairman, director, secretary of a company not actively engaged in trade or business (Circular No. 15/99)
(ii) Chairman, secretary, officer or member of the board of a co-operative society, a management committee of the incorporated owners of a building (Circular No. 15/99)
(iii) Landlord of rented accommodation

(c) Charities
Officer, trustee or governor of any charitable, benevolent or philanthropic
institution, and where a company has been established for such purpose, chairman, director or secretary of such company (Circular No. 15/99)
